Marek – From Class Outcast to Class Hero
When fourteen-year-old Marek first came to Klokánek, he carried more weight on his shoulders than any boy his age should. His father, left disabled after a serious car accident, could no longer take care of him. The two of them had no family to fall back on, and most of his father’s money went straight to medication.
Marek arrived quiet, worried, and unsure of himself. Until then, he had been the one caring for his dad. Suddenly, he had to trust strangers and start again. At Klokánek he found safety and space to breathe. During the week he went to school. Under the gentle guidance of the caregivers, he learned things he’d never done before - cooking, tidying, becoming more independent. On weekends, he always went back to see his dad. Those visits reassured him their bond wasn’t broken and gave him hope that one day they’d live together again.
Six months later, the moment he’d been waiting for finally came. His father’s health had improved enough to take him home. But Marek wasn’t the same boy who had arrived. He had grown - not just taller, but in confidence. From the kid who was once bullied, he became one of the most liked in his class. And when he brought in pizza or homemade cakes he’d learned to bake, even his classmates couldn’t resist.
His dad also secured the benefits and heating allowance they desperately needed. Life became easier. Today, father and son are back together. Stronger, tougher, and with the knowledge that in their darkest time, they weren’t alone.
